The Tekes BioRefine annual seminar, a two-day event co-organized with the FuBio program, and a meeting point of the Finnish expertise attracted this year a lot of participants.
Several presentations highlighted various new bioenergy-related developments, including concepts to produce second generation biofuels using woody materials as the main feedstock.
The FuBio program, on the other hand, presented several topics that relate to the production of new biomaterials from wood. Program Manager Niklas von Weymarn stated that the 5-year FuBio entity is well underway.
Currently four new FuBio programs are being planned as a continuation to the current 2-year program that will end next spring. “We are putting a lot of effort shaping the new programs so that they resemble potential new, industrial value chains. We are thus looking for external partners to fulfill the latter parts of these value chains.”, Niklas von Weymarn said.

The amount of valuable information created in Forestcluster research programmes is increasing rapidly. To improve the easy access of this information different structures and tools are needed.
We have just started to develop a new research database with search function. The aim is to create a research database for the information created in the programs of Forestcluster Ltd.
The project team consists of three people Pauliina Tukiainen (EffTech Program Manager), Outi Lemettinen (Communications Manager) and Henry Palonen from Inno-W.
The database is structured in the following categories:
- Articles in scientific journals
- Conference presentations and posters
- Theses
- Articles in Magazines and Newspapers
- Patents
- Reports
The now available material in Wiki will be fed into the data base by Forestcluster Ltd and this will not increase the workload of our research or industry partners. However, when the data base is established it means a stricter and controlled way of including material into the data base. The project group will keep you on the track of the progress of this development.
The functions and structure of the database will be tested in December. The project team, one industry representative and one researcher will participate the testing. The material from Intelligent and resource-efficient production technologies (EffTech) program is used for testing the database and search functions because we have a lot of different material from this program. The structure of the database will be developed based on the feedback.

More than 60 participants got together at Jyväskylän Paviljonki on October 27th to hear up-dates of the QVision research project.
There were 17 SME companies present at seminar to share ideas with researchers and large companies." Could the traditional, large automation players be able to utilise SME companies as application developers, like in telecom business?” asks Petri Nyberg from Jyväskylä Innovation.
It is the sincere hope of Forestcluster that in this way it is possible to support and perhaps advance entrepreneurship in Finland.
Highly relevant end-user perspectives were introduced to the seminar audience in key notes by Markku Mäntylä, Metso Automation and Risto Ritala, Tampere University of Technology.
Please contact Pauliina Tukiainen (pauliina.tukiainen@vtt.fi) for further information.
Presentations:
- Future challenges and opportunities for industrial applications based on image measurements, Risto Ritala
- Feasibility of image based measurements in quality control and improving operational efficiency, Markku Mäntylä and Mika Kosonen
- Image base measurements SME point of view, Petri Nyberg
- 2-D web variability analyzer, Tommi Kärkkäinen
- High-resolution structural measurement, Heimo Ihalainen
- Rough-resolution structural measurement, Lasse Lensu
- Particle and fibre analysis, Jari Käyhkö
- 2-D control methods, Kauko Leiviskä
- Surface chemistry, Jouni Hiltunen
