Research on modelling and analysing fibre networks received additional investment benefitting the forest cluster
The Academy of Finland carried out the first SHOK-related open call last year. In this call, the Academy of Finland funds research with a total of EUR 7.2 million. The funding is granted to seven research consortia and two research projects.
A research project on modelling and analysing fibre networks got funded. It is affiliated with the thematic areas of Forestcluster Ltd. The research is led by Jussi Timonen from the University of Jyväskylä, and the consortium involves researchers from the University of Helsinki as well.
The idea in the project is to develop new image processing methods for fibre network analysis. Digital pictures are taken from fibre products using X-rays or either reflected or transmitted light.
“The purpose is to develop efficient algorithms which recover fibre network features from X-ray and optical images. Features most interesting to the end-users include tear and stroke strength and printability of paper.
New mathematical methods are more efficient in finding fibre networks’ orientation distribution and they enable new type of online quality control and adjustment related to that process”, tells Samuli Siltanen from the University of Helsinki.
The University of Jyväskylä group has the fibre network know-how and experience on radiation physics research. On the other hand, the University of Helsinki group has excellent know-how in modern inversion algorithms and image processing.
